The coalition rejected a bill to establish a state commission of inquiry into the October 7 massacre

The Knesset plenum today (Wednesday) rejected the bill to establish a state investigative commission to investigate the failures of the October 7 massacre. The proposal was initiated by MK Orit Parkash-HaCohen (the state camp), but was rejected by a majority of 53 votes to 45. The opposition tried to withdraw the proposal at the last minute after it became clear that it did not have a majority, but the coalition insisted on putting it to a vote.

Bereaved families in the stands responded with “screams of shame” at the rejection of the proposal. Karen Twig, the sister of Yeftah Dan Twig, who was murdered in the yellow container at the Nova party while saving the lives of young women: “I don’t understand how the members of the Knesset can look at us – the grieving families in theirs. ” Eyes. The blood of my brother and all the victims will not be wasted. The fight is just beginning.

Members of the opposition supported the proposal, including state camp leader Benny Gantz, Avigdor Lieberman, Gadi Eisenkot, Miki Levy and Pnina Tamno Sheta. Coalition members, including Defense Minister Israel Katz, Gila Gamaliel, Yariv Levin and David Bitan, voted against it. Members of Otzma Yehudit who resigned from the government voted with the coalition. Since the proposal is now rejected, the law cannot come back to a vote for another six months.

Parkash-HaCohen said from the Knesset podium: “The government refuses to set up an independent commission of inquiry to investigate the greatest catastrophe that has befallen Israel. Over 70% of the public is calling for a government commission of inquiry and the coalition is ignoring this.” This call is unimaginable. State camp chairman Benny Gantz added: “Yesterday the chief of staff took responsibility and resigned, and today the coalition decides to shirk responsibility. A state investigative commission will be set up – if not in this Knesset, then in the next.”

Minister Gila Gamaliel, who represented the government’s position, claimed that “a state commission of inquiry should be agreed with the majority of the people. This is not the time to set up such a committee while fighting continues. “At the end of the war a committee will be set up to examine all the circumstances and draw conclusions.”
