It’s a familiar scenario: a group of friends spend a relaxing weekend in a cabin in the woods, only to be picked up by a murderous intruder. In The Blackening, however, the main characters are aware of horror film tropes – and determined not to fall into them.

The Blackening follows a group of black friends on an outing to celebrate June 16th. But when they are trapped with a killer, there is a lot of comedy and gore. Based on a 2018 short of the same name by comedy sketch group 3Peat, the film seems bent on slaughtering the wearyest of horror movie clichés.

In 2022, Dewayne Perkins — who wrote and starred in the short film the film is based on — addressed the premise in an interview with Collider. “The intent was to take tropes and then expand on them to force audiences to realize that tropes are people too. My character is a ‘gay best friend,’ a trope that comes up in movies,” he said. “Normally, [gay best friends are] be sidelined to be a person who gives humor or they are part of a joke. Being able to take those tropes and find exactly what’s making them complex, what’s giving them depth, and then forcing that into the movie so that when you start watching it you see what was in horror movies before , and then the goal of the film The film is to constantly challenge your assumptions about these characters by constantly forcing depth.
