Shakes sold to nursing homes that were reminded after a fatal outbreak of Listeria

Frozen Shakes were called back to nursing homes, hospitals and other institutions after the drinks were bound to Listeria’s fatal outbreak for years, the Food and Drug Administration announced on Friday.

At least 11 people have died of the outbreak since 2018 and dozens have been taken to the hospital, the FDA said, but earlier studies could not find any source of the bacteria.

In 37 of the 38 known cases, patients were hospitalized; 34 The infected people were hospitalized in long -term care facilities or goods before they got sick with Listeria.

Cases were reported in 21 states, including California, Florida and New York. There have been 20 cases since January 2024, and the outbreak continues, the FDA said.

The FDA said on Friday that the outbreak with Lyons Readycare and Sysco Imperial Frozen Shakes had been associated with the addition of meals. They come in four ounces boxes and flavors such as vanilla, strawberry and chocolate.

The FDA said it was informed about a outbreak of Listeria on November 25 and, after a review of the records in facilities in which people who had met with the infection, found a connection to the frozen shakes, a connection to found the frozen shakes.

The centers for the control and prevention of diseases worked with the FDA to examine the outbreak.

Lyons Magnus, the Food Service Company, which distributes the drinks, said on Saturday in a press release that it remembers the Shakes because they could be contaminated with the bacteria Listeria Monocytogenes.

The company said that the drinks were largely sold in long -term care facilities and were not available for retail sales.

Most people who get sick through food through food show symptoms such as fever, diarrhea, vomiting and muscle pain for a few days or no symptoms at all.

The drinks were made by Prairie Farms Dairy in a facility in Fort Wayne, Indiana, said Lyons Magnus. Prairie Farms did not immediately answer a request for a comment on Sunday.

Sysco, a food sales company, said in a press release on Friday that it remembered the Shakes and stopped the purchase of other Lyons Magnus products from Fort Wayne.

“Sysco expresses our most genuine condolences with those affected by this outbreak and their families,” said the company in a statement.
