Iran executes man for suspected attack on military site during January protests
DUBAI – Iran has executed a man named Ali Fahim who was convicted of an alleged attempt to storm a military facility and gain access to an armory during unrest in January, state media said on Monday, after the Supreme Court upheld his verdict.
Iran has already executed three other people linked to the incident, including Amirhossein Hatami early last week and Mohammad-Amin Biglari and Shahin Vahedparast on Sunday.
According to human rights group Amnesty International, another man implicated in the same case is expected to face execution in the coming days.
In January, nationwide anti-government protests were suppressed. This was the largest crackdown in the history of the Islamic Republic.
Authorities said the defendants tried to confiscate weapons and military equipment during the protests, describing them as “rioters” acting against national security.

Amnesty International said several defendants faced execution over the unrest, adding in a recent report that detainees in such cases had been subjected to torture and “grossly unfair trials.”
Ali Fahim, 26, and Mohammad Amin Biglari, 19, were taken from the general ward of the prison to an unknown location for execution.

Tehran said more than 3,000 people were killed in the unrest, including members of the security forces and bystanders, and attributed the violence to “acts of terrorism.”
However, the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) said it had recorded more than 7,000 deaths, the vast majority of them protesters, adding that the number could be even higher, with some estimates putting the number in the tens of thousands.
Iran has executed several people linked to the protests or opposition groups in recent days, including members of the banned People’s Mujahideen (MEK).
The executions come against the backdrop of Iran’s war with Israel and the United States, which erupted on February 28 with attacks that killed the Islamic Republic’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei.
