Clock ticks on Bill to make California the first state with anti -Semitism wax dog in schools
JTA-die time is almost triggered for California legislators to adopt a signature law template that aims to curb anti-Semitism in K-12 formation.
If from 715 becomes a law, this will mark for the first time that a state creates anti -Semitism for public schools and possibly set a template for others. The draft law is also an important test case for whether states in this area can set laws in this area without restricting the speech about Israel – a balance in the center of national debates.
With an end to the legislative period of September 12, the negotiations on the final language will be completed by the end of the week, a hearing in the Senate Education Committee at the beginning of next week and set up a sprint through the remaining stops. The legislation must overcome the opposition from one of the two large teaching unions of the state and several bourgeois freedoms, which are both influential forces in Democratic California in California.
A coalition that represents a wide range of Jewish groups throughout the state, which was compiled by the Jewish Committee on Public Affairs, has made its main priority this year. It is also at the top of the agenda for the Jewish Caucus in California. Followers say that Jewish students in California schools are exposed to increasing harassment and discrimination and that districts often do not react effectively.
“The increase in anti-Semitism in our public education system in California was a long-time problem before October 7, 2023. Since then it has gotten worse,” said Senator Scott Wiener, co-chair of the Caucus, at a recent press conference on the legislation. “We have seen some really cruel, hateful, hateful behaviors towards Jewish students in California schools, and too often the schools have not reacted appropriately to tackle this bigotry.”

On October 7, thousands of terrorists from Hamas who penetrated into Israel slaughtered around 1,200 people and kidnapped 251 into the Gaza Strip. The rush touched the continued Israel Hamas War in the Gaza Strip and a drastic increase in anti-Semitism around the world.
Wiener pointed out that swastikas that were carved into school buildings and Jewish students with anti -Semitic rings and class discussions that Jews represent as murderers or colonizers had carved bullying.

A closer legal template that focused on ethnic study classes was discussed for years until it was replaced by from 715, which applies to the entire public school system. After the shift, the new legislative proposal of black, Latin American and Asian American and Pacific islanders in Sacramento supported. The chairman of the Latino Caucus is the majority leader of the Senate, Lena Gonzalez. Senate leader Mike McGuire, one of the most powerful politicians in the state, later also advocated the legislation.
In the past few weeks, several liberal opponents have attacked the measure by comparing them to politics that were issued during the Trump government. They argue that the legislation introduces the same type of language in relation to anti -Semitism that has made it possible for federal recovery against university formation.
Lily Greenberg wrote in the New York Times in August, which had resigned in the protest of the Biden administration about the US support for the war in Gaza, said that the draft law was: the fusion of anti -Semitism with criticism of Israel.
“In reality, [the bill] Imported one of the most worrying censor tactics from the Trump era into a deep blue state, “she wrote.” Democrats are those who cite the indictment. “

Mara Harvey, a Jewish school teacher and board member of the California Teachers Association, repeated the criticism in a recent essay. She warned that the “right censorship in Trump-style censorship would bring to California schools”. Harvey said she was deeply concerned about anti -Semitism in the classroom, but argued against the law’s approach.
Viennese pushed back in his recent speech. He said his own sharp criticism of the behavior of the Israeli government in Gaza was proof that the calculation should not protect Israel from the debate. He also called out what he describes as “false and extremely dangerous narrative that was prevented” and which confronts with anti -Semitism on the left to prevent Trump.
“Just because Donald Trump abuses anti -Semitism does not mean that there is no anti -Semitism,” said Wiener.
Jewish groups mobilize the followers to travel to Sacramento next week to get involved in the draft law in the committee for Senate Committees.
