Nine was killed in the Austrian city of Graz at school; Attacker too dead

A shooter killed at least nine people on Tuesday and wounded many others in an attack in a secondary school in the southern Austrian city of Graz, said the city’s mayor.

Mayor Elke Kahr, quoted by the Austrian news agency APA, said that many injuries were taken to the hospital after the shootout, which she described as a “terrible tragedy”.

Several students and at least one adult were among the dead, Kahr confirmed. The perpetrator was also found dead, the Austrian police said on Tuesday in one post on X.

According to the Austrian public broadcaster ORF, the police quoted, a student was behind the shootout, which led to the evacuation of the school.

The reports did not state how many of the dead students were. Annual vans were on site in front of the school.

A spokesman for the local police said the area was secured. People were evacuated from school and the relatives of the victims and students were looked after, he said.

“There are no words for the pain and grief that we all feel like – all of Austria -,” he added.
